Volunteer Work
Volunteering has been one of the key aspects of my personal growth and enrichment. I have volunteered all my life, in hospitals with the elderly, and with children as a Catechism teacher using the Faith First Program. My volunteer work has primarily been related to education, but not exclusively. A few of these volunteer positions include:
Online Dialogue Trainer (former Facilitator) (2007- present) with Soliya.
Soliya is an
international non-profit organization partnered with the UN Alliance of
Civilizations whose mission is to improve relations between Western and
predominantly Muslim societies through media facilitated cross-cultural
dialogue. Their Connect Program, in which I am an online facilitator, connects
university students from western schools (located in the US, Canada and some
European countries) to students in universities in the Middle East and North
Africa (MENA). Soliya sessions are 10 weeks long, and are integrated in students' programs for additional credits.
Curriculum Adviser (2011-2013) with the Educators Volunteer Network (EVN)
The
EVN was an online network founded through the Canadian International Learning
Foundation (CILF), where educators from Canada are connected to educators in
conflict-affected regions of the world, and build knowledge and support through
this online community. I worked with a school in Uganda (Rock
Community School), assisting with curriculum resource attainment, fund raising
and garnering book donations. Additional tasks I have participated in have
included developing a school website, and providing literacy lesson plans for
teachers to use.
Below are a few web articles have been written about my volunteer work with the EVN:
